Information about the place

Piazza Giovanni Freti is located in the historic center of Sarnico, immediately behind the lake and with a beautiful and unmissable 15th century church behind it.

Historical notes on the church of San Paolo:

The oratory of San Paolo was probably built in 1428 on the ruins of the ancient Marenzi castle. During the restoration of 1969, two loopholes belonging to the walls of the medieval castle were identified. The facade of the Oratory has a baroque portal (1724) in local stone and two windows on the sides. Inside we admire the fresco of an unknown painter from Bergamo from the end of the 15th century, depicting the Pietà and the saints Cosma and Damiano inserted in a fake architecture that imitates a wooden triptych.

The section of the saints was destroyed for the insertion (1638) of the two reliquaries (of the saints Callisto and Pontiano) set into the wall and surrounded by stucco frames on which rest the statues of Saints Peter and Paul, whose cult is also witnessed by the fresco on the right wall, where the two apostles are inserted in two painted frames.
